Sitcom Improv: Characters, Comedy & Chaos
What makes a great sitcom? Memorable characters, ridiculous situations, and people who never quite learn from their mistakes.
From Friends and Seinfeld to The Office and Community, sitcoms thrive on strong personalities, complicated relationships, and the wonderful ways ordinary life can spiral out of control.
In this workshop, we'll explore how to bring that same energy to improvised theatre, creating sitcoms with recurring characters, intertwining storylines, and comedy that grows naturally from the people on stage.
We'll work on:
Creating memorable characters: From lovable weirdos to straight-faced protagonists, build characters with strong points of view, recognizable quirks, and surprising emotional depth.
Finding comedy in relationships: Explore how contrasting personalities, hidden desires, and unspoken objectives generate conflict and laughter.
Building sitcom storylines: Learn to establish A-plots and B-plots, introduce complications, and bring familiar characters back into increasingly ridiculous situations.
Playing truthfully: Discover why the funniest moments often come from taking absurd situations completely seriously.
Putting it all together: Use these tools to create improvised sitcom episodes with an ensemble cast.
The focus is on playful, naturalistic acting, strong character choices, and discovering comedy rather than forcing jokes.
Whether you love sitcoms or simply want to develop stronger characters and relationships in your improv, this workshop will give you new tools for creating funny, engaging stories.
No scripts. No laugh tracks. Just great characters making questionable decisions.
